Nisse Strinning

Nils “Nisse” Strinning was a Swedish architect and designer born in 1917. Well know for his strong, minimalist designs such as the String bookshelves, Nisse’s works are both functional and refined, with a constant attention to proportion and details. He is the founder of two companies: String Design AB and Swedish Design AB.

Nisse Strinning was born on the 8th of December 1917 in Kramfors, Sweden. He designed the famous String bookshelves with his wife, not long after graduating from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, where he studied architecture. String is typical of the designer’s work: functional, minimal and timeless. Nisse is considered as one of the leading mid-twentieth century designers who built the foundation of what we now call Scandinavian design. Throughout his life, he received many important awards, such as the Gold Medal at the Milan Triennale. His String collection is available at SCP.
