When the Amanta Sofa was first launched, renowned Italian architect and designer Mario Bellini did more than introduce a new piece of furniture; he helped redefine how interiors could shape social life. With its modular, low-slung silhouette and sculptural clarity, Amanta offered a bold alternative to the conventions of its time, inviting new ways of gathering, lounging, and living together. Now, almost six decades later, HAY reissues the Amanta Sofa for a new generation, updating its materials while preserving its spirit – a testament to the enduring relevance of Bellini’s approach to design.
Retaining Bellini’s iconic silhouette, the updated design features a shell made from 99% post-consumer recycled ABS and cushions crafted from 94% bio-balanced foam. A palette of new shell colours and upholstery options, chosen by HAY, brings the design firmly into the present.
To mark Amanta’s reissue, HAY invited Marco Sammicheli, Curator of Design, Fashion, and Crafts at Triennale Milano and Director of the Museo del Design Italiano, to reflect on Bellini’s impact and the cultural moment that gave rise to Amanta.
In the late 1960s, social liberation and creative experimentation swept across Italy. Bellini’s Amanta emerged from this energy, challenging domestic archetypes with an adaptable seating system defined by floating cushions and a seamless shell. Radical for its time, it marked a bold departure – not only through its use of industrial materials like fibreglass, which embodied the technological optimism of the era, but also in how it redefined sitting itself, encouraging informal, communal living.
As Sammicheli observed, ‘Amanta wasn’t just ahead of its time – it helped shape the era in which it was created.’ Today, the sofa remains socially dynamic: a design that invites movement, conversation, and flexibility.
Available as a single module or in pre-configured 2, 3, or 4 seater variants, it adapts effortlessly to both domestic and public settings. Now reissued within HAY’s universe, Amanta brings timeless Italian design into the present.
