Long-time SCP collaborator Terence Woodgate has created a new modular upholstery design for the SCP 2024 Collection, where each element, be it seat, arm or back have a relationship in which one overlaps the other.
"This design came about while playing with some blocks to see how I could create a signature relationship between the parts."

Overlap is made at SCP’s specialist upholstery factory in Norfolk, England, using 100% natural and sustainable materials.
Terence Woodgate is a known for his exacting and highly engineered designs, so we asked him to explain a little behind his working process on Overlap. Did he draw? Sketch? Model?:
"Sketching; which is really a conversation with self, without words – Drawing; which is the first stage of trying to make sense of where it all may go – Models; where it hopefully starts to come together – CAD models, where the work really begins as you try to keep the original concept true while working with ergonomics, never easy – Renderings; where you see the design and everything that’s wrong with it for the first time. I use a 100mm lens to keep the images realistic - and then back to drawings and renderings to communicate the intent, because it is still an intent at this stage, prior to prototyping."

The final result is an armchair and sofa system with parts that all work in close relation to each other. Ergonomically considered and generously proportioned, Overlap is a design suitable for a wide range of applications, both in a domestic setting, or in the workplace.
