SCP's House of Upholstery

Join Sam Walton, Editor of Hole & Corner Magazine, at SCP East on 4 May as he hosts a talk with SCP designers, Matthew Hilton, Lucy Kurrein and Philippe Malouin. Alongside a Q&A, Walton will discuss craft, design and sustainable furniture making at SCP East from 7pm to 8pm.

Throughout London Craft Week, SCP will present a collection of products that contextualise their unique approach to designing and making. Additionally, a live demonstration in upholstery making takes place alongside the talk – with makers from their specialist upholstery factory in Norfolk in attendance.

SCP has always walked the line between craft and design. They continue to utilise British craft based skills in many of the products they create – including traditionally made upholstery pieces from Norfolk, terracotta tableware from Suffolk, ceramics from Stoke-on-Trent and textiles from Yorkshire.

For this exhibition, SCP present a new sofa from Matthew Hilton, an armchair from Philippe Malouin, lighting designs from Reiko Kaneko and a selection of product highlights from the SCP archive.

RSVP here for a talk and Q&A chaired by Sam Walton, Editor of Hole & Corner Magazine at SCP East. Sam will be discussing craft, design and sustainable furniture making with SCP designers, Matthew Hilton, Lucy Kurrein and Philippe Malouin

Experience the master upholsterers in action with two live demonstrations on 5 May. Join the team from Coakley & Cox, SCP’s own upholstery factory, as they build a Balzac armchair from scratch. There are two demonstrations happening, the first at the Geffrye Museum from 10am to 12pm, then from 1pm they will be at the SCP showroom.

As part of the Geffrye Museum’s Second Sitters exhibition, SCP’s upholstery factory will upholster one of Matthew Hilton’s iconic Balzac armchairs live throughout the morning. Alongside, upholsterers from the Second Sitters show will work on an identical frame, their frame is a blank canvas to upholster in their own styles. Second Sitters will be upholstering live throughout the day. Completed chairs will be on display for the remainder of the exhibition.
